Atishi Joins Protest as Wangchuk's Health Worsens Amid Hunger Strike
In the shadows of Delhi's Jantar Mantar, a remarkable stand-off continues to unfold, drawing attention to the plight of Ladakh's fragile ecosystem. Sonam Wangchuk, an educator and climate activist, finds himself at the centre of this unfolding drama, his health a visible testament to his commitment.
Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 15 days, has seen his health decline alarmingly. His blood pressure has plummeted to 104/66 mm Hg, and he has lost a troubling 7.8 kg. Despite these worrying figures, he remains resolute, advocating for urgent environmental reforms in Ladakh.
Protest Gains Momentum
Joining the protest on its 24th day, Atishi, a notable political figure, lent her voice to the cause. Her arrival was marked by a message of solidarity: "Power to you Sonam and young cockroaches," she declared, invoking the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a group supporting Wangchuk.
The CJP, which has been staging protests at Jantar Mantar, has become synonymous with persistence. Their quirky name belies a serious mission: to rally support for Wangchuk's demands and highlight the environmental threats facing Ladakh.
A Growing Chorus of Support
Wangchuk's plight has not gone unnoticed. Uddhav Thackeray, a prominent political leader, has also thrown his weight behind the cause. He has urged Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, emphasising the need for his health and well-being for the country's sake.
The stakes are high. Ladakh's delicate environment, already under strain from climate change, faces further threats from unchecked development. Wangchuk's protest seeks to draw attention to these issues, advocating for sustainable policies that respect the region's ecological balance.
As the protest continues, the question remains as to how long Wangchuk can sustain his fast. His health is a pressing concern, but so too are the issues he champions. The coming days will be critical, not only for Wangchuk but for the future of Ladakh's environment.
