Bengal's Buses: A Political Kaleidoscope on Wheels

As the buses trundle through the bustling streets of West Bengal, their changing colours tell a story of political shifts more vivid than any campaign poster. Recently, the hue shifted once again, from blue to saffron, marking the latest chapter in the state's vibrant political saga. Yet, for the weary commuter, this kaleidoscope of colours offers little solace against the backdrop of persistent service issues.

Political parties have long used the public transport system as a canvas for their ideological expressions. The red buses once symbolised the dominance of the Left, followed by the blue of the Trinamool Congress. Now, saffron buses are making their presence felt, echoing a broader national trend.

However, these cosmetic changes do little to mask the more pressing concerns that plague the state's transport system. The shortage of drivers and maintenance staff has left many buses idle, much to the frustration of daily commuters who rely on public transport for their livelihood.

Symbolism vs. Substance

For the average commuter, the political symbolism is of little consequence compared to the practicalities of reaching their destination on time. "It's all well and good to have a saffron bus," says Anjali, a regular commuter, "but what I need is a bus that actually runs on schedule."

Despite the colourful displays, there is a growing demand for improvements in the reliability and efficiency of the service. Commuters are calling for investments in the recruitment and training of drivers, as well as better maintenance facilities to keep the fleet operational.

A National Phenomenon

West Bengal is not alone in this political colouration of public transport. Across India, states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have embraced saffron in their fleets, aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) political aesthetics. However, the efficacy of such symbolic changes in improving public services remains questionable.

As the buses continue their journey through Bengal's streets, they remain a metaphor for the political journey of the state itself. But for the commuters packed inside, the ride remains bumpy, regardless of the colour outside.
