Delhi's Workers Scorch Under Relentless Heatwave

Amid the shimmering heat of a Delhi afternoon, the ground beneath the feet of the city's workers could sear like a skillet. Here, the air is thick with dust and the heavy scent of impending rain, yet relief remains a distant dream for many.

Severe heat waves have swept across India since April, with the mercury soaring to oppressive levels. For the city's labourers, the choice is stark: endure the dangerous heat or forgo a day's wages.

In response, officials have scrambled to introduce measures aimed at alleviating the burden. Across Delhi's 13 districts, mobile relief vans stocked with cold water and oral rehydration salts traverse the cityscape, offering some respite. Additionally, strategically placed tented areas serve as 'cooling zones', though these are often oversubscribed and under-resourced.

Struggling to Cope

Praveen, from the Delhi Asangathit Nirman Mazdoor Union, voiced the concerns of many. 'The working conditions here are far from ideal,' he remarked. 'There is no shade under which a worker can rest, and there's little water available.'

These relief efforts, while commendable, are insufficient for the scale of the crisis. The mobile vans, though a lifeline, cannot be everywhere at once. For countless labourers, the reality is a punishing routine of manual work under a relentless sun.

The Human Cost

The human cost of this ongoing heatwave is profound. Heatstroke cases have risen, with medical facilities straining under the added pressure. For many, the choice between health and wages is no choice at all – it is a desperate gamble driven by necessity.

As the sun beats down on Delhi, the inadequacy of current measures becomes glaringly apparent. Long-term solutions are needed to safeguard those who form the backbone of the city's workforce. Until then, Delhi's labourers continue to toil under the searing sun, caught between the hammer of survival and the anvil of economic hardship.
