Education Minister Pradhan Addresses On-Screen Marking Concerns

Amidst a flurry of criticism, India's Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, has stepped forward to defend the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. The system, introduced as a modern approach to streamline the evaluation process for Class 12 board examinations, has been met with widespread discontent following reports of scoring discrepancies.

In a recent press conference, Pradhan described the OSM as a 'progressive and student-centric' tool, designed to bring transparency and efficiency to the examination system. Yet, he was quick to acknowledge the system's initial teething problems. "We are aware of the glitches that have occurred, and we are committed to addressing them swiftly," he assured. The minister's remarks come in response to an outcry from students and educators who have raised concerns about the reliability of the system.

Technical Hiccups and Student Concerns

Since its implementation, the OSM system has faced criticism for errors that students claim have affected their results. Pradhan admitted that the transition to a digital marking system has not been without its challenges. He emphasised, however, that these issues are temporary and part of the growing pains associated with such a significant technological shift.

"The introduction of any new system will naturally encounter some resistance and hurdles," Pradhan noted, adding that the ministry is actively working with technology partners to remedy the situation. The minister also highlighted that the long-term benefits of the OSM system, such as reduced human error and enhanced result processing speed, far outweigh its initial setbacks.

A Step Towards Modernisation

Despite the current controversy, Pradhan remains optimistic about the future of the OSM system. He pointed out that this initiative aligns with the broader goal of modernising India's educational infrastructure. "In the age of digital transformation, it is imperative that our educational assessment systems evolve," he said, urging stakeholders to view the system's potential for improvement.

As the ministry works to resolve these issues, students await updates on how their concerns will be addressed. In the meantime, Pradhan's assurances are aimed at bolstering confidence in the system's ability to adapt and improve. The education landscape in India is indeed at a pivotal moment, one where technological integration must be matched by robust support and oversight.
