India Pledges Support to Nepal with Health and Heritage Initiative

In a significant move that highlights the enduring ties between India and Nepal, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has virtually handed over 72 health facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects to Nepal. This handover comes as part of a broader Reconstruction programme aimed at aiding Nepal's recovery from the devastating 2015 earthquake.

The virtual ceremony, attended by Jaishankar and his Nepali counterpart Shisir Khanal, marks a milestone in India's ongoing support for Nepal's resilience and development. The programme not only focuses on rebuilding infrastructure but also aims to preserve Nepal's rich cultural heritage, which suffered considerable damage during the earthquake.

Unwavering Support

Since the 2015 earthquake, India has been a steadfast partner in Nepal's recovery efforts. The handover of these facilities is a testament to India's commitment to fostering regional stability and cooperation. The health facilities, spread across various regions in Nepal, are expected to enhance medical infrastructure and improve healthcare access for thousands of Nepalis.

Meanwhile, the restoration of 12 heritage sites underlines a shared cultural bond, recognising the importance of conserving historical landmarks that are significant to both nations.

Broader Implications

Beyond the immediate benefits of infrastructural development, this initiative signifies a strengthening of bilateral ties, with discussions between Jaishankar and Khanal also touching upon crucial issues like connectivity and energy cooperation. The launch of the cross-border digital payment linkage, UPI-NPI, further exemplifies this collaboration, promising to enhance economic integration between the two neighbours.

As both nations look to the future, it is clear that such collaborative efforts will play a crucial role in shaping a resilient and thriving South Asian region. The handover of these projects is not merely a strategic gesture but a reaffirmation of the friendship that has long existed between India and Nepal.
