Indian Peacekeepers Revitalise Livestock Health in Jonglei

Amidst the sprawling expanse of South Sudan's Jonglei region, where verdant fields often echo with the lowing of cattle, a quiet revolution is taking place. Indian peacekeepers, part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), are transforming both livestock health and rural livelihoods, marking a notable shift in the region's dynamics.

At the heart of this transformation lies the Tibek Cattle Camp near Bor, a hub of activity where Indian veterinary peacekeepers have rolled up their sleeves to offer free veterinary services. In a day-long camp, they treated over 550 cattle and examined 224 goats, providing much-needed care to animals that are the lifeline of local communities.

Reducing Tensions Through Health

The Indian contingent's efforts go beyond mere medical treatment. By enhancing livestock health, they are addressing a root cause of conflict in the region: the competition for pasture. Healthier animals mean families are less likely to migrate in search of grazing land, a change that has significantly reduced tensions between pastoralists and farming communities.

One local farmer expressed gratitude, saying, "Our cattle are healthier than ever, and we no longer fear clashes over grazing rights." Such sentiments are echoed across Jonglei, where peace and stability remain fragile.

Empowering Local Vets

In addition to direct interventions, the peacekeepers have also focused on capacity building, training local veterinarians in advanced animal husbandry practices. This sustainable approach ensures that the knowledge and skills remain long after the peacekeepers have moved on.

The Indian peacekeepers' initiative is part of a broader UNMISS mandate to foster peace and development in South Sudan, a nation that has grappled with internal strife for decades. By safeguarding livestock, they are not only preserving a vital economic resource but also nurturing the seeds of peace in a land long scarred by conflict.

As the sun sets over Jonglei, casting a golden hue over the fields, the promise of a more harmonious future seems within reach, thanks in no small part to these dedicated peacekeepers from India.
