India's LPG Price: Low Despite Global Surge, Says Government
In a world where energy prices are as unpredictable as a British summer, India stands out by offering its citizens some of the lowest LPG prices globally, according to the government. Despite a staggering 46% increase in global benchmarks for liquefied petroleum gas, the retail price of a 14.2-kg cylinder in India remains relatively modest at ₹942, compared to the international supply cost exceeding ₹1,600.
This apparent contradiction is not an accident but a calculated move by the Indian government to protect consumers from the vicissitudes of global energy markets. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has pointed out that while commercial LPG rates have soared, household prices have been kept steady, a feat achieved through subsidies and strategic pricing policies.

The recent surge in international oil prices, driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, has wreaked havoc on global energy markets. Crude oil prices have nearly doubled in the past month, leading to considerable economic pressure worldwide. In this context, India's ability to maintain affordable domestic LPG prices is noteworthy.
Public Sector Undertaking Oil Marketing Companies (PSU OMCs) are bearing significant under-recoveries to keep petrol and diesel rates in check, incurring losses of ₹24.40 per litre on petrol and ₹104.99 on diesel. Yet, the government has managed to shield the average Indian household from similar inflationary pressures concerning cooking gas.
The Government's Balancing Act
While the state keeps household prices stable, commercial LPG prices tell a different story. In Delhi, the cost for a 19 kg cylinder has reached an eye-watering ₹3,071.50. This dichotomy suggests a targeted approach, wherein essential household needs are prioritised over commercial considerations.
The balancing act is not without its challenges. As the government continues to subsidise household LPG prices, the financial strain on public coffers increases. However, officials maintain that this strategy is essential for economic stability and social welfare.
