The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics: over 300 pedestrians reportedly die each year due to encroached footpaths. The GBA's decision, however, has not been without controversy. Vendors have voiced their concerns, alleging that civic officials have used statements from Minister Krishna Byre Gowda to threaten them with eviction.
Amidst the uproar, the BJP has criticised the government’s approach, suggesting that it unfairly targets the livelihoods of small vendors. They argue that the relocation efforts are not adequate and that the government should focus on more comprehensive urban planning solutions.
