NCPEDP Unveils Innovative Assistive Tech Policy for Disability Inclusion

In a move poised to reshape the technological landscape for disabled persons in India, the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), backed by Mphasis, will launch a pioneering policy paper in New Delhi. The document, titled 'Assistive Technology in India: A Systems and Investment Approach', proposes a comprehensive strategy to harness technology for inclusion, independence, and economic participation.

Assistive technology, a lifeline for many, has long been marred by inadequate policy frameworks and patchy implementation. The NCPEDP's initiative seeks to bridge these gaps, advocating for systemic changes that could unlock the potential of millions. The paper outlines specific investment strategies aimed at fostering an environment where assistive devices are not only accessible but also affordable.

A Vision for Inclusion

Arman Ali, Executive Director of NCPEDP, emphasised the transformative potential of technology. 'This policy marks a significant step towards a society where every individual, regardless of ability, can participate fully,' he stated. Such a vision is particularly pressing in India, where over 26 million people live with disabilities, often facing social and economic marginalisation.

The policy paper highlights the need for collaboration between government, industry, and civil society. By fostering partnerships, the initiative aims to create an ecosystem conducive to innovation and accessibility. The strategy also underscores the importance of investing in research and development to drive down costs and expand the range of available technologies.

Economic Participation

Beyond mere access, the document stresses the economic implications of assistive technology. By enabling disabled individuals to contribute to the workforce, these technologies can significantly boost economic productivity. NCPEDP's approach is not merely philanthropic but pragmatic, recognising the untapped potential within this demographic.

As the NCPEDP prepares to unveil this policy, it invites stakeholders to join in this ambitious endeavour. The hope is that through collective effort, the barriers faced by disabled people can be dismantled, paving the way for a more inclusive society.
