NCPEDP's Groundbreaking Policy Paper to Transform Assistive Tech in India

NCPEDP's Groundbreaking Policy Paper to Transform Assistive Tech in India

In a bold stride towards inclusivity, the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) is set to unveil a landmark policy paper on 24th June, advocating for the integration of assistive technology as essential infrastructure in India. Supported by Mphasis, this initiative seeks to address the glaring gap in access to assistive devices, which currently reaches less than ten per cent of those in need in low and middle-income countries.

The policy paper not only underscores the importance of treating assistive technology as a critical component of social and economic infrastructure but also projects the Indian market to potentially balloon to USD 8-10 billion by 2030. This growth, however, hinges on the establishment of a comprehensive national framework that supports policy-led innovation and investment.

Such a framework is crucial, given the substantial barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing the tools they need for education, employment, and daily activities. The absence of a dedicated policy has left many reliant on ad-hoc solutions, which are often inadequate and unsustainable.

According to the NCPEDP, the policy paper will offer foundational recommendations for a National Assistive Technology Policy Framework. It calls for a reimagining of how India designs, delivers, and finances assistive technology, urging stakeholders to view these tools not merely as aids, but as integral components of a modern, inclusive society.

While the road to comprehensive policy implementation may be fraught with challenges, the potential rewards are significant. A robust assistive technology sector could not only improve the quality of life for millions but also contribute to economic growth and productivity.

As India stands on the cusp of potentially transformative change, the NCPEDP's initiative signals a hopeful step towards a future where technology bridges gaps, rather than widens them.
