Nilgiris Business Owners Rally Against Tourist Road Closure

In the mist-laden hills of the Nilgiris, a storm is brewing—not of weather, but of words. Business owners in this picturesque region are voicing their dismay over the closure of the Kalhatty Ghat Road to tourist vehicles. This route, a serpentine stretch with its infamous 36 hairpin bends, has become the centre of a heated debate.

For the past two years, the road has been out of bounds for tourists, a decision made after a spate of accidents that underscored its perilous nature. The authorities argue that the move prioritises safety, especially during the peak tourist season. However, the lifeblood of local businesses—tourism—stands to be severely affected.

"Our businesses rely heavily on the influx of tourists passing through this route," lamented one local shop owner. "The alternative through Gudalur is a 30-minute detour, but many tourists are deterred by it, opting instead to skip our area altogether."

While residents' vehicles can traverse the Kalhatty Ghat, the restriction on tourists has raised concerns over lost revenue. Theppakadu Elephant Camp and the nearby Tiger Reserve, both accessible via this route, see fewer visitors, impacting everything from small eateries to souvenir shops.

Despite the protests, officials remain steadfast. "Safety cannot be compromised," a spokesperson stated. "We understand the concerns of the business community, but the alternative route via Gudalur is both scenic and safer."

As the debate continues, the question remains whether a balance can be struck between economic needs and safety concerns. For now, the picturesque roads of the Nilgiris echo with the voices of its people, seeking a resolution that satisfies both commerce and caution.
