Sports Minister Urges Schools to Champion Anti-Doping Education

In a move aimed at curbing the ever-present spectre of doping in sports, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called for the integration of anti-doping education into school curricula. Speaking at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in New Delhi, Mandaviya underscored the critical need for awareness campaigns to be extended to educational institutions.

“The menace of doping is not just a threat to sports, but a societal issue that undermines the integrity of competition,” Mandaviya stated. He proposed that schools and colleges become bastions of clean sport, where young minds are nurtured with values of fair play and honesty. This initiative, he believes, could play a decisive role in shaping the future of Indian sports.

A Broader Educational Approach

The Sports Minister's proposal comes in the wake of increasing incidents of doping violations among athletes, not only at the professional level but alarmingly among young sports enthusiasts. By embedding anti-doping education in school programmes, Mandaviya aims to instil a proactive stance against substance abuse from an early age.

As part of this broader strategy, athletes participating in national competitions like the Khelo India Games will also undergo mandatory anti-doping awareness sessions. These sessions are designed to educate and inform athletes about the risks and ethical implications associated with doping.

Rural Outreach and Future Prospects

In addition to targeting urban educational centres, Mandaviya emphasised the importance of reaching rural areas, where knowledge about the dangers of doping is often limited. He suggested that outreach programmes in these regions could significantly impact the fight against doping by raising awareness and education at the grassroots level.

The minister's initiative reflects a growing recognition that the battle against doping must start well before athletes reach the professional stage. By fostering an environment of clean sport through education, India could potentially mitigate the damage caused by doping scandals and nurture a new generation of athletes who value integrity over short-term gains.
