Surge in Cyclosporiasis Cases Across the U.S. Raises Alarm
In what appears to be a significant public health challenge, the United States is grappling with a sudden spike in cases of cyclosporiasis, a food-borne illness known for causing severe intestinal distress. Since May, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 1,645 cases acquired within the country, a staggering 561% increase from the same period last year.
The illness, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, is primarily associated with contaminated food and water. Symptoms include intense diarrhoea, fatigue, and stomach cramps, often leading to dehydration if not treated timely. While not typically life-threatening, it can cause considerable discomfort and disruption, particularly in vulnerable populations.
Health officials are currently investigating over 5,100 additional cases across 34 states. This surge has led to heightened scrutiny and concern, particularly in states like Oklahoma, which has seen a notable rise in incidents over the past fortnight. In response, Oklahoma has launched a cyclosporiasis dashboard to track and manage the outbreak more effectively.

Determining the precise origin of the outbreak remains a challenge. Cyclosporiasis outbreaks are often linked to imported fresh produce, but domestically acquired cases suggest local sources could also be at play. The CDC has urged consumers and businesses to exercise caution, especially regarding the handling and preparation of fruits and vegetables.
In the meantime, public health campaigns are being ramped up to educate the public on preventative measures. Washing fresh produce thoroughly and ensuring proper food hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
