Astrologer Appointed as Adviser: A Divisive Move by Tamil Nadu's CM
In a move that has left many scratching their heads, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has stirred the political pot by appointing astrologer Vetrivel as his Officer on Special Duty. This decision, while perhaps unsurprising to those familiar with Vetrivel's pivotal role in Vijay's electoral campaign, has nonetheless provoked a storm of criticism from his political allies.
The appointment has not gone down well with the Congress and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), key partners in the ruling coalition. D Ravikumar, the VCK general secretary, did not mince words, labelling the decision as "unacceptable" for a government that prides itself on its secular credentials.
"This appointment by the government is unacceptable," Ravikumar stated. "It is also unacceptable that this individual will provide political advice. This is incompatible with the principles of a secular government," he added, urging the Chief Minister to reconsider his choice.
The controversy centres around the perceived encroachment of astrology into the political arena, a sphere traditionally governed by secular and rationalist principles in India, especially in states like Tamil Nadu. The state's political landscape has long been shaped by Dravidian ideologies, which typically eschew religious and superstitious influences in governance.
While Vijay's decision might be seen as a nod to his personal beliefs or a strategic move to harness popular support, it undeniably sends a mixed message. Critics argue that it risks alienating a section of the electorate that values secularism as a cornerstone of governance.
Supporters, however, suggest that Vetrivel’s appointment is an expression of Vijay's trust in his long-time aide, whose predictions of a landslide victory in the last election were famously accurate. For them, this is less about astrology and more about loyalty and effective counsel.
As the debate unfolds, the appointment raises broader questions about the role of non-traditional advisers in government. In a country where astrology holds significant cultural sway, the line between personal belief and public duty is often blurred. Whether Vijay's decision will prove to be a masterstroke or a misstep remains to be seen.
