Centre Unveils Green Camps to Foster Eco-Consciousness in Schools

In a bid to instil a sense of environmental responsibility in the younger generation, the Centre has embarked on an ambitious project: Green Summer Camps. Scheduled to run from 5 June to 30 June, these camps are set to turn classrooms into incubators of eco-consciousness.

The programme is part of the broader Mission LiFE initiative, which stands for Lifestyle for Environment. It seeks to encourage schools across the nation to engage students in hands-on environmental activities. The aim is not just to educate, but to inspire practical, sustainable habits that students can carry into adulthood.

Mission LiFE: More Than Just a Slogan

Mission LiFE is structured around seven key themes, each serving as a pillar for the activities planned during the camps. Schools are tasked with organising activities that align with these themes and are encouraged to document and share their initiatives on the ecoclubs.education.gov.in portal.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to embedding environmental consciousness at the grassroots level. By targeting schools, it hopes to cultivate a generation that views sustainability not as a choice, but as a necessity.

Engaging Young Minds

The idea is simple yet profound: to transform learning environments into spaces where students can engage directly with environmental issues. Activities may range from planting trees and recycling projects to understanding biodiversity and the impact of climate change. The approach is experiential, aiming to move beyond traditional classroom learning.

Involving students in such activities could potentially have a ripple effect, influencing families and communities to adopt greener practices. The initiative is a call to action for educators to foster a culture of sustainability within their schools.

As the camps kick off, the hope is that these small steps will lead to significant shifts in attitudes towards the environment. While the programme is limited to a month, its impact could resonate far beyond the confines of the school year.
