The allure of an IIT degree or the prestige of IAS status can transform a groom into a prized commodity in the hidden economy of Indian marriages. Despite legal prohibitions, dowry demands persist, cloaked in the guise of 'gifts' or 'customary exchanges'. The unspoken rate card, influenced by educational qualifications and professional stature, remains a stubborn ghost from the past that haunts the present.
At the heart of this issue is the perception of value—an IIT graduate or an IAS officer is often seen as a ticket to social mobility, prompting families to bid extravagantly in the marriage market. The stakes are high, with dowries reportedly reaching astronomical sums, sometimes eclipsing the bride's family's entire life savings.

One might assume that education and modernisation would curtail such practices. Yet, the opposite appears true. The more elite the degree, the loftier the dowry expectation. It is a paradox of progress: as India strides towards a future of digital prowess and global influence, it remains shackled by traditions that undermine its advancement.
