Delhi's Pollution Battle: Minister Yadav Urges Swift Action

Delhi's air quality, a perennial concern as winter approaches, has once again come under the spotlight. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has issued a stern call for accelerated efforts to implement anti-pollution measures in the capital. As the smog-laden season looms, Yadav's ministry is pushing for swift action, emphasising the need for better coordination among various agencies and the rigorous enforcement of existing regulations.

Yadav's statements come at a critical juncture as Delhi braces itself for the annual surge in pollution levels. The minister highlighted the importance of industrial compliance with environmental standards, urging that local authorities ensure industries transition to cleaner fuels and adhere to the stringent norms. The adoption of PNG gas and the enforcement of BS-VI fuel standards are pivotal elements of this strategy.

Public Transport and Traffic Management

Traffic congestion, a major contributor to Delhi’s pollution, is also under the government’s scrutiny. Yadav stressed the need for enhanced traffic management and the expansion of public transport options. Smart traffic systems and improved road infrastructure are among the measures being considered to alleviate vehicular emissions.

Furthermore, the minister called for comprehensive dust control measures, including the regular watering of roads and the enforcement of construction and demolition waste rules. With the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in place, these initiatives aim to mitigate the dust that exacerbates the capital's air quality woes.

Community Involvement and Monitoring

Emphasising the role of public participation, Yadav urged citizens to contribute to pollution control efforts. Enhanced monitoring of air quality through advanced devices and stringent checks on municipal waste management are also part of the multi-pronged approach to combat pollution.

The minister's directives include an overarching call for Delhi's authorities to submit their annual action plans by the end of December, focusing on weekly and monthly targets. The aim is clear: to avert a repeat of the hazardous air conditions that have plagued the city in previous winters.
