FIFA Workshop in Delhi: A Fresh Look at Amateur Football
Under the sweltering skies of New Delhi, a two-day conclave sought to redefine the future of amateur football in India. The FIFA Amateur Football Environment Analysis workshop, which wrapped up yesterday, brought together enthusiasts and experts with one common goal: to elevate the game played by millions at the grassroots level.
Led by Chokey Nima, the FIFA Regional Technical Consultant for South Asia, and Javier Sánchez, the Amateur Football Analysis Manager, the workshop was a collaborative effort between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and FIFA. With a focus on sustainable and inclusive development, the discussions traversed through a range of topics crucial for nurturing talent in the amateur leagues.
Fostering Local Talent
The workshop emphasised the need to identify and foster local talent. "India’s potential in amateur football is immense, yet largely untapped," noted Nima. The programme aimed to equip local coaches and administrators with the tools needed to cultivate young players who could eventually transition to professional levels.

As climate change continues to impact global sports, the workshop also addressed the need for environmentally sustainable practices in the management of football grounds and facilities. Sánchez highlighted, "Sustainable practices are not just beneficial for the environment but also ensure the longevity and accessibility of the sport for future generations." The initiative aims to integrate eco-friendly measures within local football organisations, thereby reducing their carbon footprint and promoting inclusivity.
