Hyderabad Embraces FDR Technology for Road Revamp in CURE Area
Amidst the bustling streets of Hyderabad, a quiet revolution is underway. The city's CURE area is set to benefit from the latest in road maintenance technology, with Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) poised to reshape the way blacktop roads are laid and managed. Under the aegis of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme's second phase, this initiative promises not only to bolster road quality but also to embrace sustainability.
The crux of FDR technology lies in its ability to recycle. Existing bituminous roads are excavated, and the material is then rejuvenated with cement, lime, and chemical stabilisers to form a robust base layer. This method is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, reducing the need for new materials and minimising waste.
Tackling Environmental and Economic Challenges
Incorporating FDR technology in road construction aligns with broader efforts to address urban environmental challenges. By significantly cutting down on new material usage, the approach aids in reducing the carbon footprint of road construction projects. Economically, it offers a more sustainable solution by lowering long-term maintenance costs.
The financial commitment is substantial, with Rs 707 crore earmarked specifically for additional bituminous roads. This investment underscores the local government's dedication to modernising infrastructure while being mindful of both fiscal and environmental responsibilities.

The programme's ambitions extend beyond road surfaces. Acknowledging Hyderabad's notorious monsoon challenges, the initiative will see the establishment of Monsoon Emergency Teams. These dedicated units will tackle potholes and water stagnation, ensuring smoother journeys during the rainy season. Additionally, the construction and remodelling of stormwater drains are planned to alleviate waterlogging issues.
