India's Environmental Plight: Second to Last in Global Ranking

In the latest Environment Performance Index (EPI) for 2026, India has been ranked 176th out of 177 countries, a position that underscores the severe environmental challenges the country faces. With an EPI score of 22.46, India is just above Laos, which occupies the last spot.

The EPI is a comprehensive global assessment that measures the environmental health and ecosystem vitality of countries, focusing on how effectively nations are managing their environment and tackling climate change. India's dismal performance is a stark reminder of its ongoing environmental struggles.

Environmental Health and Ecosystem Vitality

Despite being one of the world's fastest-growing economies, India has long been criticised for its environmental policies. The index evaluates countries based on various indicators, including air quality, water resources, biodiversity, and climate change efforts. India’s low ranking is largely due to poor air quality, significant biodiversity loss, and inadequate efforts in mitigating climate change.

Urban pollution remains a critical issue, with cities like Delhi often topping global pollution charts. The loss of biodiversity, driven by rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, further exacerbates the environmental crisis.

Policy and Public Response

The Indian government has introduced several initiatives aimed at improving environmental conditions, such as the 'Clean India Mission' and efforts to increase renewable energy capacity. However, the EPI ranking suggests that these measures have yet to yield significant results.

Public awareness and grassroots movements have also been on the rise, with many citizens demanding stronger action to combat environmental degradation. Yet, the gap between policy and implementation remains a significant hurdle.

As India navigates its path towards economic development, the challenge will be to balance growth with sustainable environmental practices. The EPI results serve as a critical wake-up call, urging policymakers to reassess and intensify their strategies to safeguard the country's environmental future.
