Minister Cracks Down on Fake Telegram Channels Before NEET-UG
In a pre-emptive strike against the scourge of misinformation, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has ordered a comprehensive crackdown on fake Telegram channels that have become a breeding ground for falsehoods surrounding the NEET-UG exams. This decisive action follows a high-stakes meeting with central security and intelligence agencies, underscoring the government's commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of one of India's most competitive examinations.
The NEET-UG re-examination, slated for 21 June, is already a source of considerable stress for students vying for medical college placements across the country. The proliferation of fake news, particularly claims of leaked exam papers, has only compounded their anxiety. These channels, masquerading as legitimate sources of information, have been instrumental in spreading unfounded rumours that threaten to destabilise the examination process.
Minister Pradhan, in his address to security agencies, emphasised the importance of a coordinated approach to neutralise these threats. "The integrity of our educational assessments is non-negotiable," he stated, highlighting the need for stringent measures to prevent any potential disruption. The minister's directive includes collaboration with social media companies to identify and dismantle these fraudulent channels swiftly.
Ensuring Fairness and Transparency
Beyond the immediate task of dealing with misinformation, the ministry's focus is also on ensuring that the forthcoming exams are conducted transparently and fairly. In recent years, the credibility of competitive exams in India has come under scrutiny due to various malpractices.
