In a decisive move reflecting a growing environmental consciousness, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has put a halt to the proposed conversion of the stranded cargo vessel MV Maa into a tourist hub off the coast of Visakhapatnam. The NGT's decision, delivered by a bench led by Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, pivots on the vessel's location within the CRZ–IB zone, a coastal area categorised as ecologically sensitive. Activities in such zones are subject to stringent regulations, and the tribunal has stipulated that no development should proceed until all statutory environmental clearances are obtained.
