Supreme Court Directs IIT Roorkee to Reserve Seat for Student's Mental Health Transfer

In a landmark decision highlighting the importance of mental health, the Supreme Court has ordered IIT Roorkee to reserve a seat for a student from IIT Kharagpur seeking a transfer on mental health grounds. The student, whose identity remains undisclosed, has been fighting a legal battle to move closer to AIIMS Delhi for ongoing treatment.

The student's plight first came to light when he sought a transfer to IIT Delhi to facilitate his mental health treatment. Unfortunately, the variance in course durations between the institutions, with IIT Delhi offering a four-year programme against Kharagpur's five-year module, posed a challenge. Consequently, he petitioned for a transfer to IIT Roorkee instead.

The Supreme Court's directive comes with a stipulation: a Medical Board at AIIMS must assess the student's condition and submit a report back to the court. This decision reflects a broader societal shift towards recognising mental health as a legitimate concern warranting institutional flexibility.

The Court's intervention is particularly significant given the student's background, as he belongs to the Scheduled Caste category. This factor adds a layer of complexity to his case, spotlighting the intersection of mental health and social equity in India's educational landscape.

This case could set a precedent for how educational institutions address mental health needs, potentially prompting policy changes to accommodate students with similar challenges. As the court awaits the Medical Board's report, the student's future hangs in the balance, but with a glimmer of hope.
