Telangana Braces for Soaring Temperatures: Heatstroke Warning Issued
With the mercury poised to soar to a blistering 44°C in some parts of Telangana, the state’s health department is urging residents to be on high alert against heatstroke. The India Meteorological Department's forecast of a gradual increase in temperatures over the next three days has prompted this advisory, with officials emphasising the need for precautionary measures.
The warning comes as part of a broader effort to educate the public about the dangers of extreme heat, which are often underestimated. Heatstroke, characterised by symptoms such as confusion, seizures, and a body temperature exceeding 40°C, can swiftly become life-threatening if not addressed promptly. The elderly and those with existing health conditions are especially vulnerable.
Dr. Anjali Rao, a consultant at Hyderabad’s Apollo Hospital, remarked, “With such high temperatures, dehydration can occur rapidly, and without sufficient fluid intake, heatstroke is a serious risk. The public should prioritise hydration and avoid exposure to the sun during peak hours.”
Preventive Measures Urged
Authorities have issued an orange alert across districts expected to bear the brunt of the heatwave. They recommend the use of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and wearing loose, light-coloured clothing to minimise the risk of heat-related illnesses.
While the immediate focus is on the next few days, the rising temperatures highlight a concerning trend linked to broader climatic changes. As summers grow hotter, the need for public awareness and infrastructure to cope with such conditions becomes all the more critical.
Citizens have been reminded to check on vulnerable neighbours and family members, ensuring they have adequate access to water and are not left in poorly ventilated spaces. The health department’s advisory serves as a timely reminder that, in the face of rising temperatures, vigilance is the best defence.
