UK Health Agency Monitors Nine Contacts Amid Hantavirus Concerns
The spectre of hantavirus has surfaced in the UK, with health officials placing nine individuals under watchful surveillance. This follows the confirmation of three British nationals diagnosed with the virus, believed to have stemmed from an outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), these individuals had direct or indirect contact with the confirmed cases. The agency has stressed the importance of adhering to precautionary measures, including the use of condoms and thorough personal hygiene, as outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The cruise ship, which has been at the centre of this outbreak, is currently making its way to Tenerife. Once there, the 19 British passengers and three crew members will be transported to Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral for quarantine and observation.
This alert has triggered an international response, with authorities in 12 countries, including the UK, conducting extensive contact tracing and monitoring. The hantavirus, primarily spread through contact with rodent excrement, poses significant health risks, prompting these stringent measures.
