In the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, commonly known as Vizag, the gleaming facades of burgeoning data centres are casting long shadows over environmental protocols. As these digital behemoths sprout across the landscape, the demand for cooling water surges, a concern that has recently come under public scrutiny.
The Environmental Reporting Collective (ERC), a global network of investigative journalists, has spotlighted these issues, revealing that social media giant Instagram curtailed access to a video related to their investigation into the environmental ramifications of Vizag's data centre boom. The video, part of a broader exposé, highlighted the excessive water consumption typical of such facilities, with industry leader Google reportedly consuming 31 billion litres across its centres worldwide in 2024 alone.
Regulatory Concerns
Critics argue that the regulatory framework surrounding these projects has been systematically weakened. Allegations suggest that since 2014, India has seen a deliberate easing of environmental regulations, ostensibly to enhance the 'ease of doing business'. This has, however, often translated into a mere perfunctory nod to environmental assessments, reducing them to formalities rather than substantive evaluations.
Bolisetti Satyanarayana, a noted environmental activist in the region, points to international precedents where similar environmental concerns have led governments to impose strictures on data centre expansions. According to him, Vizag’s situation reflects a troubling global trend where economic expediency trumps ecological prudence.
