Writers’ Buildings: A Return to History and Hope for Traders

Standing tall amidst the bustling heart of Kolkata, the Writers’ Buildings is more than just a relic of colonial architecture. As the West Bengal government prepares to move its secretariat back to this iconic site, small traders in the vicinity are pinning their hopes on a revival of fortunes.

The decision to return the seat of the state government to Writers’ Buildings, after a decade long hiatus, has been met with enthusiasm by local businesses. These traders have long awaited a boost in foot traffic, which dwindled following the secretariat's relocation to Nabanna in Howrah in 2013.

The Historical Significance

Built in 1777, the Writers’ Buildings originally housed clerks of the East India Company. Over the years, it became a symbol of administrative power, witnessing significant events including an armed raid by freedom fighters during India's struggle for independence. Its corridors have seen the likes of Chief Ministers from the Congress and CPI(M) era.

In 2011, shortly after Mamata Banerjee ascended to power, the secretariat was moved to Nabanna, a modern facility in the neighbouring city of Howrah. However, the iconic red brick structure, often referred to as 'Mahakaran', retained its cultural gravitas, albeit with restricted public access due to ongoing restoration work.

Traders’ Optimism

For the small traders who operate in the precincts of BBD Bagh, this administrative shift is not just a bureaucratic shuffle; it's a potential lifeline. "We have seen a significant drop in customers since the secretariat moved," says Anil Das, a local shopkeeper. "The return could mean more business for us, as government officials and visitors frequent the area again."

While the move has been politically charged, with the BJP advocating for the secretariat's return to Kolkata, the economic implications are what truly excite the local traders. The anticipated increase in footfall is expected to benefit eateries, stationery shops, and other small enterprises that have struggled in recent years.

As restoration efforts continue, the Writers’ Buildings stands poised to reclaim its status as the nerve centre of West Bengal's administration. For the traders, it is a hopeful harbinger of better days to come.
