Capturing Change: World Environment Day's Artistic Lens

As the planet grapples with the existential threat of climate change, the World Environment Day photography contest arrives as a timely reminder of our collective responsibility. This year's theme, 'Restoring Environment', seeks to capture the resilience and ingenuity of individuals and communities striving to combat environmental degradation.

The contest is orchestrated by the British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, in partnership with the Indo-British Scholars’ Association and Earth Day Network. It draws attention not just to the stark realities of climate change, but also to the innovative solutions being developed across the globe.

Judges of Renown

Esteemed judges Dhritiman Mukherjee, Haimanti Poddar, and Ashwika Kapur bring a wealth of experience and a keen eye for authenticity to the jury panel. Mukherjee, an award-winning nature photographer, emphasises the power of imagery in galvanising public action. 'A single photograph can ignite awareness and inspire change,' he notes.

Inspiring Participation

Through its compelling visual narratives, the contest aims to inspire greater public participation. By highlighting stories of resilience, the organisers hope to foster a shared sense of purpose in tackling the climate crisis. The event also serves as a platform for dialogue, encouraging individuals to reflect on their role in the broader environmental context.

Last year’s contest saw a remarkable array of entries, from vast landscapes undergoing transformation to close-up portraits of endangered species. The winning photographs were lauded for their emotive storytelling and technical prowess, setting a high bar for this year's participants.

With World Environment Day 2026 focusing on the urgent signals the Earth sends us, this contest serves as a poignant reminder of the signals we, in turn, choose to send back. In the end, it is not just about capturing a moment, but about capturing a movement.
