CSIR-AMPRI Marks 46th Anniversary with SODAR System Milestone
On a balmy September day in Delhi, CSIR-AMPRI commemorated its 46th Foundation Day with a noteworthy achievement: the inauguration of its indigenous SODAR system at the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The event, held on 26 September 2025, was not merely a celebration of past achievements but a herald of future endeavours in atmospheric and environmental research.
The SODAR system, an advanced tool for atmospheric profiling, marks a pivotal development in India's weather forecasting capabilities. By measuring wind speed and direction at various altitudes, it provides crucial data for forecasting and climate research. An MoU was signed with the IMD, facilitating data sharing that promises to enhance predictive models and research initiatives.
CSIR-AMPRI’s Director, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, lauded the efforts of the team, emphasising the importance of indigenous technology in bolstering national self-reliance. 'This is a significant step forward in our journey towards technological autonomy,' he remarked. The SODAR system is expected to play a vital role in disaster risk reduction, offering insights that could mitigate the impacts of natural calamities.
Expanding Horizons
Beyond atmospheric science, the foundation day also highlighted CSIR-AMPRI’s expanding contributions in areas such as advanced materials and environmental engineering. These domains are increasingly critical in addressing global challenges like climate change and sustainable development.
The Technology Management Directorate and the International S&T Affairs Directorate of CSIR played pivotal roles in facilitating the development and eventual transfer of the SODAR technology to industry. This transfer is anticipated to stimulate industrial growth and foster innovation in related sectors.
As CSIR-AMPRI continues to forge ahead, its commitment to fostering scientific innovation and collaboration remains unwavering. The 46th Foundation Day stands as a testament to the institute’s enduring legacy and its pivotal role in advancing India’s scientific and technological capabilities.
