Environmental Concerns as Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway Receives Approval
The Indian Environment Ministry has given the green light to a highly debated expressway connecting Varanasi and Kolkata, a decision that has sparked a flurry of environmental concerns. The ₹9,250 crore project, which will carve a path through a tiger landscape, raises questions about the balance between development and conservation.
A Balancing Act
Spanning approximately 620 kilometres, the expressway is intended to enhance connectivity between the cultural capitals of Varanasi and Kolkata. However, a 159-kilometre stretch will pass through vital forested areas in Bihar, including the districts of Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Gaya. Conservationists argue that this could disrupt critical wildlife corridors, particularly those used by tigers.
The project promises to shorten travel time significantly and foster economic linkages across four states. Yet, the environmental cost remains a contentious point. “We are at a juncture where infrastructure development must not come at the expense of our rich biodiversity,” noted a leading environmentalist.
Economic Versus Ecological Costs
Proponents of the expressway highlight its potential to bolster regional economies by improving trade routes and easing traffic congestion on existing highways. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) envisions it as a crucial link in the larger network connecting Mumbai to Kolkata.
Despite these economic incentives, critics warn of the irreversible damage to natural habitats. The diversion of forest land, albeit with official clearance, could have lasting impacts on the region’s flora and fauna. The ministry’s expert panel, though approving the project, has stipulated conditions to minimise ecological disruption, including the construction of wildlife underpasses and overpasses.
The expressway project is a microcosm of broader national challenges: balancing rapid development with the preservation of natural heritage. As debates continue, the project stands as a testament to India's infrastructural ambitions and the intricate balancing act required to achieve them.
