Sonam Wangchuk's Health Stable Amid Hunger Strike Drama

Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose hunger strike has gripped the nation's attention, is currently under medical care at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi. The environmentalist, who has been fasting for 20 days at Jantar Mantar to draw attention to climate change and governmental inaction, was moved due to concerns over his declining health.

Dr Charu Bamba of Safdarjung Hospital provided an update, stating, "Mr Wangchuk's condition is weak but stable. He remains conscious, and all vital parameters are being closely monitored." This assurance comes after a Delhi High Court directive mandated daily health checks given his frail state.

Wangchuk's protest, though peaceful, has stirred a significant response, prompting authorities to heighten security at both the protest site and the hospital. Supporters and fellow activists have rallied around his cause, emphasising the urgent need for climate action.

The hunger strike, intended as a call for immediate and decisive action on climate issues, underscores the desperation felt by many activists. Wangchuk, who has long been a voice for sustainable development, particularly in the Himalayan regions, chose this drastic measure to highlight what he deems a lack of adequate response from policy makers.

As the news of his hospitalisation spread, messages of support poured in from various quarters, including environmental groups and public figures. The situation remains fluid, with both the medical team and Wangchuk's supporters keeping a close eye on his health and ensuring his message resonates beyond hospital walls.
