Green Light for Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway Amid Environmental Concerns
In a move that has sparked both excitement and concern, the Environment Ministry’s expert panel has given the nod to the construction of a 235-kilometre expressway linking Varanasi and Kolkata. This ambitious project, part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase 2, aims to cut travel time significantly between these two cultural powerhouses, promising a journey of just 7 to 8 hours. Yet, this development has not come without its share of controversy.
The expressway's approval necessitates the diversion of over 103 hectares of reserved and protected forest land in West Bengal, including areas known to be habitats for tigers. Environmentalists have raised the alarm over the potential disruption to these ecosystems, arguing that the ecological cost could outweigh the infrastructural benefits.
Despite these concerns, proponents of the project highlight its potential to transform connectivity in the region. By linking Varanasi, Ranchi, and Kolkata, the expressway is expected to boost economic activity and provide faster access to remote areas. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, addressing Parliament earlier this month, confirmed that the six-lane highway is slated to open in 2027, marking a significant milestone in India's infrastructural landscape.
Environmental Trade-offs
While the expressway promises to unite regions and facilitate development, the clearance has reignited debates over infrastructure versus conservation. The affected forest areas are not just swathes of greenery but vital components of India's biodiversity network. Conservationists warn that the expressway could fragment tiger habitats, leading to increased human-wildlife conflict.
Yet, the ministry's panel has assured that stringent measures will be implemented to mitigate environmental damage. These include wildlife corridors and compensatory afforestation. Critics, however, remain sceptical, questioning whether these measures can genuinely replace the loss of natural habitats.
