Green Light for Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway Amid Environmental Concerns
In a decision that could reshape eastern India's transportation network, the Environment Ministry's expert panel has recommended environmental clearance for a new expressway connecting Varanasi and Kolkata. Spanning 235 kilometres, this greenfield project is set to significantly cut travel time between the two cities, which are currently separated by a journey of over 600 kilometres by road.
However, the environmental cost of this ambitious development is drawing scrutiny. The expressway will require the diversion of more than 103 hectares of reserved and protected forest land in West Bengal. Furthermore, the project involves the felling of approximately 50,000 trees, raising alarms among environmentalists and local communities who fear irreparable damage to the region's biodiversity.
Economic Benefits vs Environmental Costs
Proponents of the expressway argue that it will fuel economic growth by enhancing trade and connectivity across the region. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹9,250 crores, is also expected to boost tourism, providing a direct link between two of India's most culturally significant cities.
Nevertheless, the environmental implications cannot be ignored. The area earmarked for construction includes parts of a tiger landscape, necessitating the creation of wildlife underpasses to mitigate the impact on local fauna. Critics argue that such measures, while beneficial, may not fully compensate for the loss of habitat and the broader ecological disruption.
