India Celebrates Cheetah Milestone as Population Reaches 53
In a moment of triumph for India's wildlife conservation efforts, the cheetah population at Kuno National Park has reached an impressive 53. This development has been hailed as a proud achievement by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who took to social media to express his elation. He specifically commended Jwala, a cheetah translocated from Namibia, who has now become a mother for the third time. Her contribution underscores the success of Project Cheetah, a bold initiative aimed at repopulating the species in India.
The cheetah, once extinct in India, has been the focus of concerted conservation efforts. In September 2022, several cheetahs were translocated from Namibia to India, marking a significant step in Project Cheetah's ambitions. More recently, nine cheetahs from Botswana were introduced into quarantine enclosures at Kuno National Park. The project aims not only to restore the ecological balance by reintroducing the species but also to serve as a model for wildlife conservation.
Minister Yadav's announcement highlighted the collaborative efforts of veterinarians and field staff, whose dedication has been instrumental in nurturing the cheetahs. The increase in the number of Indian-born cubs—now totalling 33—demonstrates the project's growing success. This progress is a testament to the careful planning and international cooperation involved in re-establishing cheetahs in their historical range.
