New MLA's Green Vision for Kolkata's Environmental Revival
Swapan Dasgupta, a name synonymous with political acumen in West Bengal, has turned his gaze towards the green lungs of Kolkata. Having recently clinched victory in a prestigious assembly constituency, the BJP MLA is now channeling his efforts into an ambitious project: the conservation and revitalisation of the city's environmental landmarks.
The Adi Ganga, once a bustling waterway now reduced to a shadow of its former self, sits at the top of Dasgupta’s agenda. "Our heritage and environment are intertwined," Dasgupta remarked in a recent press briefing, underscoring the need to restore this historic river. The project, he claims, will not only enhance aesthetic appeal but also improve water management in the city.
Restoring the Past
Equally urgent is the plan to breathe new life into Rabindra Sarovar, a sprawling lake surrounded by lush greenery that has seen better days. According to Dasgupta, previous governments, particularly the Trinamool Congress, have failed to prioritise environmental concerns, allowing these sites to languish. "The neglect stops now," he stated sternly, promising immediate action.
Dasgupta's approach is a blend of judicial compliance and technical prowess. Court directives mandating the clean-up of these sites will be strictly adhered to, coupled with modern solutions like bio-remediation to address pollution.
Tramways and Transport
In a nod to Kolkata's rich heritage, the revival of the tramways is also on the cards. Once a hallmark of the city’s identity, the tram network has dwindled over the years. Dasgupta envisions a modernised tram system that not only preserves history but also reduces urban congestion and pollution.
Funding these extensive plans requires a multifaceted approach, involving state funds, private investments, and possibly international aid. Dasgupta believes that with collective effort, these initiatives will transform south Kolkata into a model of sustainable urban living.
This environmental renaissance, he hopes, will not only uplift the ecological landscape but also inspire civic pride and responsibility among Kolkata’s residents. With Dasgupta at the helm, the city’s green heart seems poised for a much-awaited revival.
