WHO Chief Reassures Tenerife Over Impending Hantavirus Ship Arrival

"The current public health risk from the hantavirus is low," declared Dr Tedros in a video message broadcast on Saturday. He reassured the inhabitants of Tenerife that robust safety protocols are in place to prevent any potential spread of the virus from the cruise ship, which is due to dock early on Sunday.
The MV Hondius, carrying the Andes strain of hantavirus, has been a point of concern since its ordeal on the high seas began. Yet, the Director-General's message was clear: "We are prepared." He emphasised the importance of solidarity and cooperation, as local authorities coordinate with international health bodies to manage the situation meticulously.

Dr Tedros's message comes on the heels of extensive preparations at the port, where health and safety officials have been working tirelessly to ensure all precautionary measures are in place.
