WHO Issues Hantavirus Alert After Cruise Ship Outbreak
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning to 12 countries following a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship that embarked from Ushuaia, Argentina. The ship, which navigated through the ecologically sensitive South Atlantic region, has now become a focal point of concern for international health authorities.
Amongst the passengers, a Swiss national has been confirmed to have contracted the Andes strain of the virus. Having disembarked in Saint Helena, the individual developed symptoms upon returning to Zurich, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Meanwhile, two Britons evacuated from the vessel have shown signs of recovery, according to WHO officials.
The Spread and Response
As the ship was anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, it became apparent that the outbreak was not contained. With one person hospitalised in South Africa and several others under investigation, the WHO's alert aims to prevent further spread.
